There are three different ways that can be used to subscribe to website RSS feeds:
1. Go to the actual website you wish to subscribe to and click the RSS picture. It will take you to a separate page asking weather you want to add it to Google homepage or Google reader.
2. The second way to add RSS feeds is through the Google reader website itself. On the top left side there is a link that says Add a Subscription, after clicked it will ask you to enter either the address of a feed or a topic you wish to search. After searching it will give you a bunch of options to choose from.
3. The last way is to enter the Google directory itself, there you will be given options to subscribe to.
There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to using Google reader to follow your websites.
Advantages:
Google reader makes life a lot easier for people who have a lot of websites they visit daily, weekly, or even monthly. By using reader you can see all of your websites at the same time and see what has new updates or what does not. It saves time when you can just check the websites that you know have been updated. Without the hassle of looking through all of the websites you check daily more time can be spent on other activities. Also, with Google reader you may look for anything you are interested in, if you want to know interesting recipes all you have to do is search recipes and subscribe to the feeds.
Disadvantages:
It may be simpler for someone who has a lot of websites they visit, but for some people who only visit a few every week or so Google reader becomes a bit redundant. It isn't useful if you only have to look through 2 or 3 websites. Google reader can also be a bit hard to use for the inexperienced users. Some people might not be used to the new ideas presented by it, and thus will have a hard time understanding its functions.
Will I use it in the future:
The simple answer would be no. For me part of the fun in looking at things online is searching for them, if everything is laid out for me it takes the fun out of it. I cannot deny that it makes life much easier but its not something necessary in my life. I do not have many websites i look through anyway just about 3 every week and its not much hard work getting through them in a couple of minutes. RSS might give people more time to do other things but time isn't something that interests me too much. As long as time is kept under control we have enough.
